Hurricane Ida is starting to cause problems for roads in the capital region, including on I-10, which closed in parts of Ascension Parish Sunday evening due to downed trees.

Around 7 p.m., the interstate closed in both directions, from La. 73 at Prairieville to La. 641 at Gramercy. Though congestion was minimal, according to state transportation officials, drivers were advised to find another route. 

Around 6 p.m. Sunday, I-10 south was closed at North 22nd Street, with traffic diverting onto North 22nd. 

State and city leaders are urging everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. The worst rain and wind from Ida was not expected to hit Baton Rouge until late Sunday night.

Several other major streets closed Sunday evening, including the Bluebonnet Boulevard underpass by Mall of Louisiana, where a 33-year-old man died during a deluge caused by the May floods. Also closed late Sunday was South Acadian Thruway from Perkins Road to I-10.
